Tyreece Washington, our featured student writer, has attended Greenville Technical College since the beginning of 2008. He is a transfer student who has been accepted at the University of Arizona and the University of Oregon. He plans to major in law with a focus on public service and then possibly go into politics. He is from Flint, Michigan, and says he feels disconnected from prosperity and the amassment of wealth in the U.S. because in Flint he experienced ghettos that are unlike anything most people can imagine. Ty enjoys reading non-fiction and is interested in topics such as philosophy, ethics, and morality. His favorite book is A Brief History in Time by Stephen Hawkins. Ty says that while he enjoys writing, and is working on an essay that compares patriotism to terrorism, he prefers talking to people better. His piece “The Great Black Farce: the un-American writer” is included in the 2009 issue of the Blue Granite Review.
