September 21 (Leah Howard)

September 21

They said it would not hurt but they were lying.

Lies help them slumber dreamlessly in bed.

My innocence did not keep me from dying.

They told me there was no point in denying

I killed him.  I’m the reason that he’s dead.

They said it would not hurt but they were lying.

With lawyers and false witnesses complying

The judge and jury members were misled.

My innocence did not keep me from dying.

It broke my heart to leave my family crying,

Knowing soon I’d be strapped to my deathbed.

They said it would not hurt but they were lying.

Despite people across the globe desperately trying

To save me, words of reprieve remained unsaid.

My innocence did not keep me from dying.

This broken system is an attempt at satisfying

The bloodlust of angry people without bloodshed.

They said it would not hurt but they were lying.

My innocence did not keep me from dying.
